Life in Thy is for the family

Thy has become home for Dina Fayyad. A permanent job at a company in Hanstholm opened the area to the family, who have lived in many countries. At "Living in Thy", other international residents can learn more about their opportunities.

She is originally from Jordan and has lived in the capital and metropolis of Amman. She has also lived in Istanbul, Turkey, France, Bulgaria and Birmingham, England before the family ended up in Denmark. Now she has been living in Thisted for almost five years and 41-year-old Dina Fayyad has no doubt about what the best about that choice is:

- It's safe here, and we feel secure. My son can walk to school by himself, and I have an interesting job.

She found the job in Hanstholm

It wasn't in the cards that the family would end up in Thy, when Dina and her husband decided to move to Denmark from Bulgaria, where he is from.

His job in the green transition was the reason they moved to Aalborg and here Dina started job hunting after her maternity leave.

She has a degree in business development and has studied in Jordan, England and France. She speaks fluent English, French and Arabic. At a career fair in Northern Jutland, she came across Teksam from Hanstholm, which was part of the Thisted Municipality booth at the fair. The company develops machines for the concrete industry, and they needed someone who spoke French to develop their market.

- I didn't know much about Thy, but after being out of the job market for a while, it would have been foolish to say no to the job they offered. So, we chose to move. My husband is an independent consultant, so he could take his work with him, Dina explains.

It took an effort to get integrated

The family is happy to have moved closer to nature and they enjoy spending time outdoors. Additionally, Dina points out that the housing market in Thy is attractive. Both factors are among the benefits of choosing to live in the area. But she also doesn’t hide the fact that the transition to a smaller community has been noticeable.

- In big cities you quickly meet people, for example at playgrounds, when you have a small child. It was harder here, and I've also found that it takes longer to make new friends because many people here already have an established social circle. I've found great joy in getting involved with Thy Internationals, and now that my son is getting older and has started playing handball and swimming, we are also making connections there, but it's important to be proactive, she says.

Come join us at Living in Thy

She encourages everyone interested in exploring the possibilities of living and working in Thy to join, when Thisted Municipality, for the fourth time, organizes "Living in Thy" at Plantagehuset in Thisted on September 19th.

That day, the municipality gathers many good resources that can inform participants about living and working in Thy.

- With Living in Thy we give international citizens the opportunity to create a network and meet others, who might also be new to the area or who want to move here. A number of associations, organizations and companies also take part in the event, giving the international citizens an insight into the many opportunities Thy has to offer. We hope that the event contributes to making the participants feel welcome and becoming an integrated part of Thy – both in the local community and on the labor market, says Trine Engholm Christensen, who is the head of the Trade and Employment department at Thisted Municipality.
